Start with what Google actually says
Google says the same SEO fundamentals used for its regular search results apply to AI features. Pages still need to be crawlable, indexable, useful, and eligible to appear in Search. Google does not require a special AI text file, special schema markup, or an AI-only version of the page.
That guidance is specific to Google Search. Other answer platforms have their own retrieval systems and controls. For every platform, clear facts, original material, consistent organization information, and pages that can be understood without guessing are a sound foundation.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) can describe work that helps answer systems find and represent a business. The labels should not turn ordinary technical SEO, useful content, consistent organization details, and careful measurement into a secret product.

Choose a question set before looking at the answers
Build a small panel from questions customers genuinely ask. Include brand questions, service comparisons, problem-based questions, eligibility or policy questions, and high-intent requests where an answer could lead to a useful next step.
Save the exact wording. Also record location context and whether the test used a signed-in or personalized environment when that is known. If questions change every round, movement may reflect the new sample rather than a change in visibility.
- Question ID and exact wording
- Platform or search feature
- Test date and stated location context
- Brand mention and the wording used to describe it
- Cited domain and exact cited URL
- Factual accuracy and any important omission
- Observable referral or conversion, when available
Score the answer before celebrating the mention
A brand mention can still be wrong. The answer may misstate the service area, eligibility, pricing, company relationship, or services offered. Review whether the narrative is materially accurate, not simply whether the name appeared.
Separate owned citations from third-party citations. An answer may mention the organization while citing a directory, news article, customer discussion, or competitor comparison. That distinction helps show which public sources appear to be shaping the result.
Useful measures include mention rate, owned citation rate, accuracy rate, and persistence across repeated checks. Call them sampled observations, include the number of questions tested, and avoid turning a small panel into a claim about every possible prompt.
Correct the source before chasing the answer
When a result is inaccurate, capture the answer and inspect the sources it used. Check the organization’s own pages for missing or conflicting facts. Then review major public references that a customer could reasonably trust.
The repair may be a clearer service page, consistent organization details, a correction to an authoritative listing, a better explanation from a qualified subject-matter expert, or stronger evidence for a statement already made. No one can guarantee when or whether a generated answer will change.
Connect the sample to business reporting
Google states that sites appearing in its AI features are included in Search Console’s overall Web search reporting. Google is also rolling out a separate generative AI performance report to a subset of site owners. That report currently covers supported impression data for AI Overviews and AI Mode; a site may not have access yet or may not have enough impressions to show data.
Use the Search Console reports available to the site for Google performance, and use the question panel to study answer wording, citations, and accuracy. They are related views, not interchangeable datasets, and the prompt sample should not be presented as Google’s internal measurement.
For platforms that pass an identifiable referrer, analytics may show visits and configured conversions. Direct traffic, copied links, and later brand searches can make attribution incomplete. Report confirmed referrals where they exist and leave the rest as observation or inference.
The best publishing opportunities often come from information the organization is qualified to provide: a transparent method, a carefully labeled case example, an original tool, a firsthand explanation, or a primary-source summary that saves the reader time. Publish it because it helps people make a decision. A citation, if one follows, is outside the organization’s control.
